Multiple people seriously injured in two-vehicle crash near Taupō

Multiple people have been seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 5, near Taupō this morning.

Police said the crash near Rangitaiki School Rd was reported around 10.30am.

St John responded to the crash with four ambulances, one rapid response unit, and four helicopters.

"At this time, two patients in serious condition have been airlifted to Waikato Hospital, and one patient in a serious condition has been airlifted to Hawke’s Bay Hospital," a spokesperson said.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said State Highway 5 was blocked in both directions at Rangitaiki due to a crash and urged motorists to expect delays.

"Expect long delays, or delay travel through the area at this time."
