Person dies in Taranaki house fire

One person has died in a house fire in Waitara, near New Plymouth, this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire on Browne St, Waitara, at around 7.30am on Friday.

Police said the person found dead was believed to have been the sole occupant of the house at the time of the fire.

"Inquiries are under way to determine the cause of the fire and at this stage there is no further information available."

Fire and Emergency NZ said crews attended the blaze from Waitara, New Plymouth and Inglewood.

"On arrival, it was well involved. The fire is contained and we are dampening down hotspots," a spokesperson said.
